What is the difference between a multi-fuel stove and a wood burner?

Stoves which burn wood, coal and smokeless fuel are known as multi-fuel. Wood burners are for burning wood only. Burning wood sits on a bed of ash as it burns, whereas smokeless fuel and coal requires a grate so that air can filter from underneath, this type of burner may also have an external riddling lever fitted which is use to shake the ash pan.

How long does a stove last?

The average lifespan of a good quality branded stove is in the region of 20 years. Having your stove serviced annually, along with employing a chimney sweep, will help prolong the life of your precious stove.

Can I have a stove in a smokeless area?

Multi-fuel and wood burning stoves can be installed in a smokeless area as long as the stove is DEFRA approved.

DEFRA is an abbreviation of ‘Department for Environment Food & Rural Affairs’.

What is DEFRA?

DEFRA Approval means that you can now burn wood in designated smoke controlled zones. All stoves which are DEFRA approved require that the stove is used in accordance with the users manual.
